Responsibilities
In this position...
This position involves battery controls and modeling research to support the development of current and future hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles within Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. The mission is to perform research to develop new battery-related features, enhance existing features, and enable lower cost, more reliable, and longer-lived batteries.
Responsibilities
- Define and own the execution of research projects related to battery management & modeling.
- Develop novel battery controls solutions based on understanding of battery cell/systems behavior in vehicles.
- Develop an understanding of novel cell chemistry specific attributes as they apply to controls and implement control strategies in the BMS that meet vehicle performance requirements.
- Identify and prescribe test methods, including novel measurements beyond traditional battery testing, which can deliver data needed to calibrate or validate BMS software solutions.
- Post-process battery cell, pack, and vehicle test data to evaluate performance or life characteristics.
- Define and lead research projects related to battery management & modeling.
- Create reduced order models/ strategies to implement the functionality of highly complex physical plant models for battery management systems.
- Transfer developed technologies to product teams by supporting verification testing at cell, module, pack or vehicle level.
- 33% Desktop Computer Modeling, 33% Developing BMS SW loading to SW, 33% Battery Cell/Pack level testing.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science, or related degree, or foreign equivalency degree, or a combination of equivalent experience and education
- 3+ years of experience with Battery Monitoring System controls development.
- Demonstrated experience performing verification testing on Battery Monitoring System control strategies.
- Ability to develop state-flow diagrams for proposed control solutions.
- Strong knowledge in one and good awareness of the other of the following competencies
- Batteries and battery systems, especially of the type used in vehicle Electrification.
- Control Systems, especially state estimation theory.
- Competency in the use of at least one of the following tools for battery simulation: MATLAB/ Simulink/ State flow, PyBaMM [WD1] [WD2] [CT3] [WD4], C++
- Experience with post-processing battery cell, pack and vehicle data using AVL Concerto, ATI Vision, Canalyzer or similar programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or foreign equivalency degree, or a combination of equivalent experience and education
- 5+ years of experience Battery Monitoring System software development
- Ability to anticipate research needs and initiate research projects.
- Knowledge of battery physics-based model development processes
- Awareness of automotive battery management hardware desired
- Excellent data analysis and interpretation capabilities
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.

This position is a salary grade 2.
