Responsibilities
In this position as a Battery materials scientist:
Contribute to a team highly engaged in all aspects of battery materials research from material synthesis, characterization, processing into pouch and coin cells, and testing for electrochemical performance. Apply advanced X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methods to battery materials, especially new cathode active materials. Apply advanced X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methods to battery materials, especially new cathode active materials. The facility includes Empyrean XRD with a wide range of stages and capabilities, Zetium WDXRF, Miniflex XRD, handheld EDXRF instrument, and mapping XRF system.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Masters in battery materials science, engineering, or other related fields
- 3 years of experience in Li-ion batteries with experimental skills in processing active material, performing cell testing and advanced characterization methods, particularly XRD and XRF. (Thesis and/or Dissertation allowed)
- Battery material characterization experience should include X-rays scattering and fluorescence methods including general powder XRD, environmental XRD (high temperature under controlled gas exposure)
- Fundamental understanding of chemical processes and mechanisms within batteries from formation to end of life.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in battery materials science, engineering, or other related fields
- Experience with synchrotron methods (XANES, EXAFS) and XPS is a plus.
- A wide range of material analysis experience is also desirable for corporate support activities.
- In-operando studies of test cells and elemental compositional analysis using WDXRF
- Relevant XRD analysis experience includes whole pattern fitting (e.g. Reitveld refinement) of X-ray powder patterns to determine phase composition, elemental substitution, and broadening effects. Experience with synchrotron methods (XANES, EXAFS) and XPS is a plus

This position is a salary grade 2.
