What To Expect
Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. That mission depends on parts that switch, actuate, and isolate at high voltage, high current, and high cadence.
The Supplier Industrialization Engineer (SIE) for Electromechanical and Electromagnetic Devices is the manufacturing owner for this commodity. You sit between Design, Purchasing, and the supplier. You are the resident process expert, the NPI lead at the factory, and the person who does not accept “the line has always run this way.”
You will industrialize contactors, relays, solenoids, actuators, pyro disconnects, switches, and small electromagnetic machines from first samples through mass production. You will spend real time on supplier floors such as welding cells, winding lines, plating, overmold, and end-of-line test. You will make on-the-spot decisions that protect Tesla’s launch and the customer.
The pace is high. The work is first principles, data, and process control, not slideware.
What You'll Do
Own industrialization of electromechanical and electromagnetic devices from advanced development through PPAP / production part approval and stable mass production — including high-voltage contactors and relays, solenoids, actuators, pyro disconnects, switches, small motors, and related electromagnetic assembliesPlan, organize, and execute supplier process development: stamping and forming of magnetic circuits and contact systems; coil winding and termination; resistance / laser welding; plating; overmolding and potting; hermetic sealing; and final functional testLead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) with Tesla Design, Reliability, and the supplier. Close air-gap, contact-force, weld, creepage/clearance, and tolerance stack-up issues before tooling kickoffDefine and freeze the process flow, PFMEA, control plan, and special characteristics (contact resistance, bounce, dielectric withstand, coil resistance, pull-in / drop-out voltage, weld splash, leak rate, insulation resistance)Qualify manufacturing lines at the supplier: equipment capability, MSA, SPC on critical dimensions and electrical parameters, poka-yoke, traceability, and end-of-line functional / hipot / leak test coverageDrive APQP deliverables and PPAP (or Tesla equivalent) to first-time-right launch. Own capacity models, OEE, yield, and ramp plans that match Tesla’s production cadence. Manage engineering change, second-source, and localization industrialization without interrupting Tesla productionAudit suppliers against IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, and Tesla process requirements. Identify gaps in process control, change management, and sub-tier (contacts, magnets, coils, plastics, platings) and close them with the supplierLead debug when yield, reliability, or delivery breaks. Run structured problem solving (8D, FTA, DOE, Ishikawa) and implement permanent countermeasure. Travel to supplier sites and Tesla factories and make technical decisions on the floorTranslate Tesla application conditions (inrush, inductive load, vibration, thermal cycling, salt, HV isolation) into supplier process windows and validation plans (ISO 16750, LV 124 / VW 80000, AEC-Q200, IEC / UL where applicable)Partner with Purchasing, Quality, NPI, and Manufacturing to hit cost, quality (PPM), and delivery. Challenge the supplier on cycle time, scrap, automation, and material utilization — first principles, not tradition
What You'll Bring
Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, or Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience3+ years industrializing, manufacturing, or qualifying electromechanical or electromagnetic devices (contactors, relays, solenoids, actuators, motors, switches, or similar). Automotive, industrial power, or high-reliability electronics preferredHands-on fluency with the processes that actually make these parts: coil winding, contact welding, magnetic circuit stamping, plating, overmold, potting, hermetic seal, and functional testWorking knowledge of contact physics (arcing, bounce, welding, material transfer), electromagnetic actuation (force vs. air gap, coil heating, residual magnetism), and insulation / creepage at high voltageProven ownership of APQP / PPAP (or equivalent), PFMEA, control plans, MSA, SPC, and process capability (Cpk) on electrical and mechanical special characteristicsAbility to read drawings, GD&T, and electrical specifications; to challenge a datasheet; and to write a clear process or test requirementStructured problem solving (8D, FTA, DOE, 5-Why) and comfort with data (Excel required; JMP, Minitab, or Python a plus)Experience auditing manufacturing quality systems (IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, ISO 9001) and driving sub-tier controlClear, direct communication with suppliers and internal engineering — written and on the factory floor. You influence without hiding behind process theaterPreferred: high-voltage contactor / pyro-fuse / traction-inverter or energy-product component experience; Six Sigma / CQE; Mandarin, German, Korean, or Japanese
