Join our team as a Horizontal Lathe Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist, where your expertise will be pivotal in manufacturing large generator shafts for the power generation industry. Imagine working on shafts that can reach up to 46 feet in length and weigh as much as 275 tons! You will adhere to safety requirements, follow engineering drawings, and execute manufacturing processes with precision. Your role will involve performing setups, collaborating with crane operators, and aligning workpieces in the lathe. With a focus on continuous improvement, you will engage with your technical support team to enhance machining techniques and contribute to our knowledge base. Your ability to work independently while fostering collaboration will ensure successful product delivery to our global customers.
How You’ll Make An Impact
- You will semi-finish and finish machining of large electrical generator rotor shafts made from alloy steel forgings, weighing up to 275 tons.
- Setup and align rotor forgings using steady rests to ensure precision and stable machining processes on various large-scale CNC lathes.
- Interpret engineering drawings and quality control documents to guarantee accurate machining and error-free results.
- Inspect work during machining stages using advanced measuring devices to verify conformance to engineering requirements.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives through the application of the 5S methodology within a Lean Production System.
- Mentor employees in the Siemens Energy Apprenticeship Program, sharing your technical expertise and providing guidance.
- Maintain records and reports as required, ensuring accurate documentation of processes.
What You Bring
- A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- At least 4 years of CNC lathe operations experience, preferably with steady rest supports; manual turning experience is a plus.
- Less experience is acceptable if you have completed a 2-year degree from an accredited machinist training program focused on CNC machining.
- Familiarity with CNC controls such as Siemens, Fanuc, or Mazak is essential.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience using basic measuring instruments and gauges.
- Proficiency in interpreting G and M codes and understanding CNC machine operation principles.
- Strong ability to interpret complex drawings and use precision measuring tools effectively.
- Willingness to obtain fork truck and crane licenses through Siemens Energy’s internal certification programs.
- Ability to obtain an ACT® WorkKeys® National Career Readiness Certificate (Silver Level or higher) as part of the pre-hire assessment.
- Physical capability to manually lift moderately heavy parts (up to 50 lbs).
- Successful applicants must pass standard hearing, vision, and pulmonary function tests as required.

We supply new generators ranging from 150 to 1000 megawatts to power plants worldwide. In addition to manufacturing, we also service generator rotors through inspections, rewinds, modernizations, and upgrades. Our Gas Services division focuses on low-emission power generation, offering decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
