What To Expect
Tesla's residential energy business runs on complex, cross-functional processes that span the full customer journey: sales and contracting through design, permitting, installation, inspection, and interconnection. No single step is self-contained. Handoffs between teams, systems, and external parties create the friction, the failure modes, and the opportunity.
As a Staff Process Engineer on this team, you'll own the seams between functions: the places where process breaks down because no one is accountable for the whole. You'll identify systemic problems before they escalate, design solutions that account for cross-team dependencies and downstream effects, and build the process infrastructure others rely on. This role is primarily process-focused. You'll carry quality practices as a lens, embedded in how you design and monitor, not as a separate function. You operate with a high degree of autonomy: cross-functional partners come to you directly, stakeholders trust your documentation as the authoritative record, and your monitoring artifacts shape what the team prioritizes next.
What You'll Do
Surface systemic problems across multiple processes, teams, and systems before they escalate, synthesizing signals from field ops, advisor escalations, data anomalies, and cross-functional partners into a clear problem frame with quantified impactDesign cross-functional process solutions with documented trade-offs, defined success metrics, and explicit consideration of scale, rollback paths, and effects on adjacent teams and systemsLead program delivery across multiple connected workstreams, sequencing builds, coordinating cross-functional dependencies, and making calls when constraints are ambiguousConfigure and build process systems end-to-end: workflow tools, case flows, form logic, queue structures, and the integrations between themBuild monitoring infrastructure others use: recurring dashboards, review cadences, and metric reports that track leading and lagging indicators across your domainApply quality methods (root cause analysis, FMEA, control plans, process capability analysis) to identify failure modes and embed controls into process design before problems reach the fieldShape team roadmap prioritization by framing cross-functional problems, surfacing evidence, and bringing forward recommendations, not just delivering within what's already scoped
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's degree in engineering, operations, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience; ability and willingness to travel domestically (5–10%)5–8 years of experience in process engineering, operations, or a closely related field in a fast-moving environmentTrack record of owning complex, multi-system projects end-to-end, scoped, built, launched, and monitored without close oversightDemonstrated ability to work across organizational boundaries and influence outcomes with software, field ops, customer ops, and product teams without manager mediationExperience configuring workflow tools, case management systems, or operations platforms; you build in the systems your team uses, not just design on paperProficiency with data analysis and SQL; comfortable pulling your own data to evaluate process performance and support decisionsFamiliarity with quality methods (FMEA, control plans, root cause analysis, process capability), applied to strengthen process design, not run a parallel quality program
