EV.Careers is currently seeking a full-time Senior Electronics Engineer (Underwater Robotics) for one of our partners that designs and manufactures professional-grade underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) serving defense, energy, and public safety markets worldwide. In this position, you will design, prototype, test, and continuously improve the electronics systems that power advanced underwater vehicle platforms — working hands-on with power electronics, embedded firmware, sensor systems, and acoustic technology in a mission-critical engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Build and validate electronic subsystems for commercial-grade ROVs, spanning power conversion circuits, motor speed controllers, sensor interfacing hardware, and onboard communication modules
- Create and maintain circuit schematics and board layouts within standard PCB design platforms such as Altium
- Vet and choose components based on long-term reliability, supply availability, and cost efficiency for use in submerged and marine settings
- Engineer and debug battery management hardware, covering charge regulation, overcurrent/overvoltage protection, and charge-level tracking
- Partner with the software team to map out hardware-to-firmware interface requirements and ensure smooth system-level integration
- Write and debug low-level firmware running on onboard microcontrollers and FPGAs
- Build and verify support for data protocols such as RS-232, RS-485, CAN, I2C, SPI, and tethered Ethernet links
- Engineer circuitry housed in sealed, pressure-resistant enclosures built to withstand extreme ocean depths
- Integrate with underwater acoustic hardware, including locator beacons, acoustic modems, and USBL-based tracking systems
- Verify that designs meet electromagnetic interference/compatibility benchmarks and underwater operational safety guidelines
- Build out and run thorough test protocols covering environmental exposure, pressure tolerance, and functional performance
- Diagnose and resolve issues reported from the field — including controller malfunctions, sensor errors, and integration failures — using structured root-cause methods
- Produce and update detailed engineering records, including circuit diagrams, parts lists, build drawings, and test summaries
- Assist the manufacturing team with build documentation and quality assurance reviews
- Coordinate with mechanical, software, and production teams to ensure cohesive, fully functioning ROV units
- Provide technical backing to sales and support teams through documentation, live product walkthroughs, and troubleshooting in the field
- Participate in shaping future product direction and supporting new development initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related field
- At least 5 years of work experience designing and building electronics
- Solid background designing power electronics, including motor drive circuits, ESCs, and DC power systems
- Skilled in PCB design using tools like Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar software
- Practical experience working with embedded microcontrollers (ARM Cortex, AVR, PIC, or similar)
- Good grasp of analog circuit design, signal conditioning, and connecting sensors to electronics
- Able to troubleshoot complex electronics using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab tools
- Experience writing technical documents such as schematics, parts lists, change orders, and test procedures
- Clear communicator, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain technical ideas simply
- Comfortable working in both an office/lab setting and a light production/assembly area
- Regularly uses electronic test equipment and hand tools in a lab setting
- Open to occasionally helping with water tank or open-water testing
- Open to occasional travel (up to 15%) for field support, demos, and trade shows
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs when handling equipment
- Able to stay productive in a fast-paced, busy work environment
- Able to juggle multiple projects at once
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with underwater or marine electronics
- Some knowledge of Linux and embedded programming
- Familiarity with underwater acoustic tools like beacons, transponders, modems, or USBL/LBL positioning
- Understanding of brushless motors and ESC tuning for underwater thrusters
- Experience with tether systems (fiber optic, twisted pair, or coax) used in ROVs
- Knowledge of waterproofing methods like conformal coating and potting for marine electronics
- Familiarity with standards such as MIL-SPEC, IPC, or IEC for marine electronics
Benefits
- Competitive base salary (DOE)
- Performance-based incentives and bonus program
- Health, dental, vision and life insurance
- 401(k) retirement plan with company match
- Paid time off
- Company paid holidays (10)
- Professional development and training opportunities
- The opportunity to work on cutting-edge underwater technology with real-world impact in defense, energy, and public safety
