Role SummaryThe Counsel/Senior Counsel, Privacy & Cybersecurity will support Rivian’s Privacy, Cybersecurity, and AI programs. We are looking for an individual who can work independently, but collaboratively in a fast-paced and collegial team environment, demonstrates sound business and legal judgment, and prioritizes/takes ownership of managing multiple projects on a broad array of topics. Reporting to Rivian’s Associate General Counsel, Privacy & Cybersecurity, this role will serve as a cross-functional subject matter expert who enjoys advising on privacy, cybersecurity, and AI, especially as they relate to commercial agreements and strategic programs.
Responsibilities- Negotiate and draft data privacy and security provisions in agreements involving data sharing or transactions with privacy/security/AI impacts in collaboration with Rivian’s Commercial Legal and Procurement teams.
- Support the development of Rivian’s global privacy and AI programs in collaboration with other key stakeholders, including the privacy operations, business, and IT teams.
- Support the cybersecurity team and development of IT security policies and procedures.
- Serve as a legal data privacy subject matter expert and a trusted resource for internal business clients across Rivian, which includes building strong working relationships with company stakeholders, advising on strategy, and considering business objectives in addition to legal compliance.
- Provide global legal counsel to the privacy operations team for operational tasks, including data governance activities, Privacy Impact Assessments/Data Protection Impact Assessments, transfer impact assessments, and data subject requests.
- Review employee, customer, and third-party privacy policies, disclosures, notices, consents, and other external-facing materials.
- Provide privacy legal counsel regarding Rivian’s marketing activities.
- Provide privacy, ethics, AI, and compliance legal counsel for international expansion efforts and emerging business models.
- Assist with developing and presenting data privacy, security, and AI trainings.
- Monitor new and emerging legal and regulatory developments, including identifying potential impacts on current and future Rivian products and services.
- Counsel Rivian’s Ethics and Compliance program.
- Support the company’s incident response efforts, including evaluating potential data exfiltrations, data exposures, vendor compromises, and personal data incidents.
Qualifications- Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school, and an active member in good standing of the CA, IL, MI, DC Bar or eligibility for in-house counsel registration.
- At least 3+ years of relevant legal experience focused on data privacy and cybersecurity matters (Senior Counsel, at least 6+ years of relevant experience).
- Experience advising on the technology and/or mobility sectors and transactions.
- Experience advising multinational, complex, and fast-growing global organizations.
- Experience drafting data privacy policies, notices, disclosures, consents, and other external facing materials.
- Expert knowledge of evolving data privacy regulatory environment with experience spotting emerging trends and new and evolving issues.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, startup and team environment.

Pay DisclosureSalary Range for Irvine, CA based applicants: $171,000 - $213,000 annually (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location and other factors permitted by law).
Salary Range for Palo Alto, CA based applicants: $186,000 - $232,000 annually (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location and other factors permitted by law).
Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Full Time Employee coverage is effective on the first day of employment. Part-Time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
