What To Expect
Tesla is seeking a Steam Turbine Engineer to support design, construction, and startup of combined cycle power plants for industrial, manufacturing, and energy projects. You will own the steam turbine scope from cycle definition through first roll, synchronization, and performance testing. You will coordinate with mechanical, piping, civil, electrical, and controls teams, and with turbine manufacturers, contractors, and commissioning teams. This role is based in Austin, with travel to project sites during construction and commissioning.
What You'll Do
Define steam turbine and steam cycle requirements from concept through issued for construction, including steam conditions, reheat, exhaust, condenser pressure, and heat and mass balancesPrepare steam turbine generator specifications, technical bid evaluations, performance guarantees, and resolution of supplier deviationsIntegrate the steam turbine with the heat recovery steam generator, condenser, bypass, condensate, feedwater, lube oil, and gland steam systemsCoordinate piping and foundation interfaces, including nozzle loads, thermal growth, water induction prevention, pedestal design inputs, and maintenance accessDefine startup and protection requirements, including start curves, rotor stress limits, trip and overspeed protection, and generator synchronizationSupport factory testing, equipment setting, alignment, strain-free piping, and mechanical completion with the manufacturer’s technical advisorsLead commissioning through steam blows, first roll, synchronization, load testing, and performance testing, including 30%, 60%, and 90% design reviews
What You'll Bring
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience5 years of steam turbine engineering, design, or commissioning on utility-scale or industrial power generation projectsExperience taking a combined cycle, cogeneration, or steam plant through construction, commissioning, and startup, including steam blows, first roll, and synchronizationWorking knowledge of steam turbine design, combined cycle thermodynamics, and balance-of-plant systems, including heat recovery steam generators, condensers, and steam bypassProficiency in a heat balance tool such as Thermoflow, GateCycle, or EBSILONAbility to apply ASME, NFPA, and IEEE requirements when reviewing drawings and writing specifications and test proceduresAbility to travel to project sites for extended periods and deliver under construction-driven schedules
