Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Head of Field Engineering to lead our field engineering activities across the UK and Ireland. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineering professional who has progressed from hands-on electrical or EV charging engineering into team leadership, but still enjoys solving real-world technical challenges. You will lead a small team of field engineers, develop the technical capabilities of our customers' installation contractors and authorised service partners, and ensure consistently high standards of onsite service quality. Most routine installation, commissioning and maintenance activities are carried out by our customers' contractors or authorised service partners. Your role is to make sure they have the knowledge, skills and technical guidance to deliver these activities successfully. When complex onsite issues arise, or service partners are unable to provide the required support, you and your team will step in, working closely with our Remote Technical Support team to resolve the problem. This is not a purely office-based management role. We are looking for someone who enjoys combining technical leadership, people development and occasional hands-on field engineering.
What You'll Be Responsible For
1. Lead Our Field Engineering Team
• Lead, coach and develop a small team field engineers supporting the UK and Ireland.
• Provide technical leadership, performance management and ongoing competency development.
• Coordinate internal field engineering resources for complex technical escalations and urgent onsite requirements.
• Support recruitment and the future development of the local engineering team.
• Maintain strong practical engineering skills and remain comfortable attending customer sites when required.
2. Develop Our Customers' and Service Partners' Technical Capabilities
• Deliver technical training to customer-appointed installation contractors and Autel's authorised service partners.
• Provide training across the AC/DC charging equipment lifecycle, including:
• Installation requirements and best practices
• Electrical testing and pre-commissioning
• Commissioning procedures
• Reactive maintenance and troubleshooting
• Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM)
• Develop practical training materials, technical guidance and standard operating procedures. • Assess technicians' technical competency and ability to work independently.
• Translate lessons learned from field issues into improved training and troubleshooting guidance.
3. Drive Service Partner Quality and Performance
• Take ownership of the technical quality and onsite service performance of Autel's authorised service partner network across the UK and Ireland.
• Monitor field service SLA/KPI performance in collaboration with our Service Operations team.
• Conduct technical audits, onsite quality inspections and workmanship assessments.
• Lead regular partner performance reviews and annual evaluations.
• Identify capability gaps and drive corrective actions, additional training and continuous improvement.
• Recommend changes to service partner arrangements where performance or technical standards are not being met.
• Day-to-day service ticket management, dispatch coordination and remote fault diagnosis are handled by our dedicated Service Operations and Remote Technical Support teams.
4. Provide Hands-on Technical Escalation Support
• Act as the senior field engineering escalation point for complex or critical onsite issues.
• Work alongside Remote Technical Support engineers to diagnose and resolve problems requiring physical site intervention.
• Arrange internal engineering support or personally attend site when service partners cannot respond or resolve an urgent issue.
• Carry out onsite electrical checks, fault isolation, equipment inspection and corrective work where appropriately qualified and authorised.
• Share technical findings and field experience to improve future partner training and service effectiveness.
5. Support Customers with Site Engineering Expertise
• Provide equipment-related engineering guidance to customers, EPC contractors and installation partners.
• Support technical discussions covering electrical distribution interfaces, power requirements, cable sizing and routing, electrical protection, earthing and installation conditions.
• Review site proposals and identify potential technical risks or compatibility concerns relating to Autel charging equipment.
• Support site readiness and installation planning discussions.
• Work with customers and their appointed designers to clarify technical requirements, without taking responsibility for the overall electrical design of customer sites.
6. Work Across Local and Global Teams
• Collaborate closely with UK Service Operations, Remote Technical Support, Sales and Project teams.
• Work with Autel's international product and engineering teams to escalate field issues and provide feedback.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of local engineering standards, partner capability and customer experience.
What We're Looking For Essential
• A strong, hands-on electrical engineering background, ideally developed through field engineering, installation, commissioning or maintenance roles.
• Proven practical experience working with AC and/or DC EV charging infrastructure, with commercial DC fast charging experience strongly preferred.
• Recognised UK electrical qualification, such as NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or an equivalent qualification.
• BS 7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.
• Experience leading, supervising or mentoring field engineers or technical teams.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver technical training or practical coaching to engineers and contractors.
• Strong knowledge of electrical testing, fault finding, installation requirements and onsite safety practices.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings and discuss site engineering requirements with customers and contractors.
• Good communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
• A practical, proactive and customer-focused approach.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the UK and Ireland, including regular visits to our Watford office. Desirable
• City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing or equivalent.
• City & Guilds 2919 EV Charging qualification.
• ECS Gold Card, SSSTS or SMSTS.
• Experience with commercial DC fast charging systems.
• Experience working for an EV charging equipment manufacturer, CPO or specialist EV engineering service provider.
• Experience managing third-party service partners or subcontractors.
• Familiarity with field service SLAs, technical audits, partner performance management and competency assessments.
• Experience developing technical training programmes or field engineering procedures.
