The Mechanical Engineer supports the Ember Cube development team, contributing to mechanical design and development from initial concept through production release. This role covers next-generation product platforms as well as ongoing support for products already in production and in the field.
This individual translates product concepts and requirements into functional mechanical designs, models, and prototypes. Day-to-day work includes hands-on CAD design, prototype fabrication, tolerance analysis, and test execution to characterize system behavior and inform engineering decisions. The role requires solid fundamentals across materials, mechanisms, thermal management, and structural design, along with a practical approach to rapid prototyping and iterative development.
The Mechanical Engineer collaborates closely with electrical, thermal, firmware, product, and industrial design teams to integrate mechanical solutions with electronics and system architectures. This individual owns discrete components, subsystems, and assemblies independently while working with guidance from senior engineering staff on complex programs.
This role is based in-office at our Westlake Village, CA headquarters and reports to the Product Design Manager.
Responsibilities
Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and prototypes for next-generation Ember Cube products, from concept through production release.
Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detail drawings, and GD&T that support prototyping, tooling, and manufacturing.
Build and test prototype hardware using rapid fabrication methods such as additive manufacturing, quick-turn machining, and soft tooling.
Perform engineering analysis including tolerance stack-ups, structural evaluation, material selection, and first-order thermal assessment.
Plan and execute engineering tests to validate design assumptions and characterize performance.
Support design for manufacturability and assembly, working with contract manufacturers and suppliers on tooling, process, and part quality.
Provide sustaining engineering support for products currently in production and in the field, including design changes, engineering change orders, root cause investigation, and corrective actions.
Support production builds and pilot runs, including on-site support at contract manufacturers as needed.
Requirements and skills
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
4–7 years of mechanical engineering experience in product development, including at least one product taken from concept through production.
Strong experience designing mechanical components using injection-molded plastics, machined components, and sheet metal.
Proficiency in SolidWorks, including detail drawings and GD&T.
Experience designing mechanical systems that integrate with electronics or embedded systems.
Experience supporting products in production, including engineering change control and field failure analysis.
Experience in a regulated or quality-controlled environment (ISO 13485, medical device, or cold chain) is a plus.
Ability to travel domestically and overseas approximately 10% of the time.
