About RivianRivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role SummaryWe are looking for a CNC Machinist III to program 3-5 Axis Mills and Lathes using advanced CAD/CAM software for precision manufacturing. This role involves analyzing designs, solving machining challenges, and producing high-quality components while ensuring efficiency. You’ll collaborate with engineers and production teams, set up and operate CNC machines, and maintain high quality standards. A strong background in CNC programming, proficiency in CAD/CAM tools, and a problem-solving mindset are essential. If you’re driven by innovation, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence, we’d love to have you on our team!
Responsibilities- Review assigned Jira tickets to determine material, tooling, fixturing requirements with autonomy.
- Ability to sort through tasks using the Critical Path Method to complete assigned machining requests in the most optimal order to meet deadlines and increase machine uptime.
- Discuss with engineering teams the issues related to manufacturability or timing, provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) feedback, modify in CAD submitted parts as discussed to ensure successful completion of task.
- Ability to quickly summarize part requirements, apply roughing toolpaths and get machine running in as little time as possible (often <30minutes), while continuing to process the finishing toolpaths on the part.
- Program parts using high end CAM software (Fusion 360, Powermill, Camplete)
- Ability to operate the GUI Control and Setup of high end multi-axis machining centers.
- Understand speeds/feeds, depth of cuts and all other tool cutting parameters for a wide variety of materials, and the ability to apply these quickly to process jobs with a minimum of delay.
- Participate in team/ peer discussions with suggestions on how to process the more complicated jobs, including fixturing and tooling requirements.
- Quick setup of mission critical parts which could disrupt company production schedules, and prevent excessive costs incurred by outside vendors.
- Review large quantity jobs to optimize program toolpaths, speeds, and feeds to reduce overall processing time
- Perform inspection tasks to ensure part conforms to required critical dimensions and specifications utilizing advanced GD&T and engineering drawing reading abilities, using standard measurement equipment (verniers, calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, gauge pins, height gauges)
- Utilize 3D Scanning Equipment and corresponding software (Polyworks) for full virtual inspection of machined parts.
- Machine maintenance including monitor filters, oil and grease levels, machine calibration and adjustment
Big Picture Tasks:
- Continuous improvement of the overall machining process on an ongoing basis.
- Sustain curiosity to explore new materials, technologies, manufacturing methods, and workflows that can benefit our Rapid Prototyping capabilities.
- Implement and follow standardized workflows to improve efficiency.
- Maintain close communication with software vendors to troubleshoot and improve software workflow.
- Work closely with the Additive Manufacturing Specialists to utilize the benefits of both technologies.
Qualifications- 4–6 years of experience in a CNC machining environment, working with Fusion 360, Mastercam, Powermill, or similar software.
- Proficient in working with 3D CAD data to create or modify existing 3D models.
- Program, setup, and operate 3- to 5-axis CNC Mills and Lathes, with a strong preference for Fanuc, Heidenhain, or Haas controls.
- Proficient in blueprint reading and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), with the ability to review G-code to troubleshoot or verify toolpaths before running.
- Strong understanding of various machining processes, tooling, and materials (e.g., aluminum, steel, plastics).
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, precise parts within +-0.002" tolerance or tighter.
- Inspect your own parts using standard precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges) to ensure compliance with tight tolerance specifications.
- Associate's Degree or Certificate in Machining Technology, CNC Programming, or a related field is highly desired.
- Adherence to safety protocols and a clean, organized work environment.
