Summary:
As a Safety Engineer I, you will support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs that support lithium-ion battery manufacturing operations. This role assists with Process Safety Management (PSM), permitting systems, high-risk equipment safety, construction safety, and regulatory compliance. You will partner with cross-functional teams to identify hazards, reduce operational risk, and promote a strong safety culture throughout the facility.
Responsibilities:
- upport the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Process Safety Management (PSM) programs applicable to battery manufacturing operations.
- Maintain safety procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), engineering controls, and related documentation.
- Support safety programs for high-risk equipment by coordinating inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance activities with Engineering and Maintenance teams.
- Assist with annual EH&S planning, risk assessments, incident response planning, and departmental improvement initiatives.
- Support construction safety activities for capital projects, equipment installations, and facility expansions.
- Coordinate contractor qualification, onboarding, orientation, and field safety audits to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain safety metrics, dashboards, and compliance records; prepare reports and track key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Develop and deliver safety training related to Process Safety Management, equipment safety, and emergency response procedures.
- Participate in emergency response planning and support tabletop exercises and emergency drills.
- Support internal and external EH&S audits and assist with the timely completion of corrective actions.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen operational safety and regulatory compliance.
- Complete daily documentation and maintain accurate engineering records.
- Follow established work instructions, safety procedures, and PPE requirements at all times.
- Follow LGESMI existing cleaning SOP’s during downtime (e.g. line stop, waiting time, etc.), which includes cleaning your designated machine and/or surrounding work area
- Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field.
- Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery manufacturing hazards, including NMP, thermal runaway risks, and Electrolyte handling and storage.
- Deep understanding of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and chemical safety regulations applicable to battery production.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, ventilation diagrams, and safety interlock systems.
- Strong leadership and communication skills for cross-functional coordination.
Experience:
- 1 to 3+ years of EH&S or process safety experience in battery manufacturing, chemical processing, or high-hazard manufacturing industry.
- Strong knowledge of and experience working with OSHA and state/local regulations and requirements
- Hands-on experience managing PSM elements such as MOC, PHA/HAZOP, PSSR, and mechanical integrity.
- Experience with emergency response for industrial chemical or thermal incidents preferred.
