Job Description
We are currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Production Shift Lead to manage the Assembly Department. The Production Shift Lead is responsible for safely producing the highest quality battery cells and will execute and be accountable for all production related activities within the departments, including meeting production, throughout, and yield requirements. The Production Shift Lead will be responsible to understand upstream and downstream processes and work with other Shift Leads as One Ultium Team to ensure efficient operation of the business to support customer demand.
The Production Shift Lead has responsibility for a large group of employees including supervisory personnel. The position involves a considerable amount of initiative in decision making and is accompanied by a high level of independent judgment. Strong people skills are required in this position, working in a joint venture environment, supporting the requirements of Ultium’s customer and parent companies, engaging hourly team members, and building a unique and inclusive Ultium culture. Ensuring the Ultium team has strong, collaborative relationships is critical.
The Production Shift Lead will be expected to understand how the equipment functions and to properly interact with the technical resource teams that support production. Technical proficiency, the ability to learn quickly, and a drive for continued technical learning/problem-solving is also important in this role.
Responsibilities
- Manage the floor operations for their assigned departments
- Understand, promote, educate, communicate, and follow up on safety processes, deliverables, and initiatives
- Maintain a safety/quality culture through direct interaction with the team, audits/observation and incident investigation, with a proactive mindset
- Have a proactive problem-solving mindset to drive continuous improvement
- Be responsible for staffing of the production team
- Develop collaborative relationships with key support resources, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, HR, Supply Chain, IT, etc.
- Lead planning activities across shifts, ensuring the operation has the proper resources and scheduled activities to effectively perform operations
- Have excellent communication, planning and organizational skills
- Leverage experience with Lean Manufacturing Systems (people empowerment, minimization of waste, standardized training and processes) and ensure execution of these processes
- Manage the floor level operations training plan for the production team
- Manage the training, coaching, and development of production supervisors
- Have the knowledge of quality control procedures, manufacturing processes, technical support systems, and management systems as they relate to the production operations
- Leverage IT systems in the plant to optimize production activities
- Must be willing to rotate shifts
- Responsible for a system of communication of production status/issues to adjacent shifts and departments
- Champion metrics, ensuring metrics/deliverables of the team are understood and aligned with overall plant metrics/deliverables
- Adjust the schedule as needed as a result of production customer changes, downtime, required repair windows, or continuous improvement activities
- Lead regular shift meetings for communication, planning, and key performance indicators
- Execute continuous improvement process workshops in the areas of throughput, quality & cost
- Manage assigned budget and achievement of productivity improvements.
- Operates as an effective communicator and relationship builder in a multi-cultural joint venture environment
Qualifications And Competencies
- Previous manufacturing experience in a large, multi-shift operation required
- 2+ years of manufacturing experience required, 5+ years of manufacturing experience preferred
- Previous manufacturing supervisory experience required (or equivalent people leadership experience)
- Must be able to speak and read English
- Experience in salaried leadership preferred
- Experience in a JV operation preferred
- Experience with lean manufacturing systems required
- Experience in leading a cross functional team/initiative required
- Proven experience in building relationships required
- Proven technical experience/aptitude required
- Ability to work rotational shifts
- Ability to travel to support personal training and that of the team
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Technical/Business preferred
- Experience as a shift/production planner preferred
- Adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Technical experience in lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes preferred

Employee may be exposed to or working with hazardous materials and/or hazardous waste. Upon hire, employee will receive initial Environmental training over RCRA, SWPPP, SPCC, and emergency escalation. Annual refresher training will be completed every year after to fulfill the requirements of 40 CFR. Other training to be provided as required.
