Advanced Engineering Lab. (AEL) is an engineering group at HATCI that focuses on advanced technology research and development that can be applied to current/future production vehicles and future mobility. AEL covers a wide range of areas from the development of new vehicle concepts to CAE and vehicle energy analysis and management.
The Position
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our High Voltage Battery System Design & Development Team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design, analysis, and validation of mechanical systems for high-voltage battery systems used in electric and hybrid vehicles.
WHAT YOU WILL DO Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Design and Modeling:
- Create detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies of high-voltage battery modules and packs using tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, or Siemens NX.
- Develop innovative mechanical designs that meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.
- 2D Drawing Creation:
- Develop detailed 2D drawings and manufacturing documentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and GD&T.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams and suppliers to ensure designs are production-ready and cost-effective.
- Simulations:
- Conduct structural and thermal analysis to evaluate mechanical durability, strength, and heat management of battery systems by using tools, such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or COMSOL
- Perform CFD simulations to optimize thermal performance and cooling system design of battery packs.
- Project Management:
- Work with suppliers to meet design requirements, project timing and achieve cost targets.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to fabricate prototypes and conduct validation tests.
- Analyze test results to verify and improve design performance.
- Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis to solve development and quality issues
- Manage suppliers’ engineering documents, such as DFMEA/PFMEA
- Lead design gate review and program milestone review
- Lead cost and performance optimization in product development
- Collaboration and Integration:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical and software engineers, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with other subsystems.
- Support system-level validation and troubleshooting activities.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably in the automotive or energy storage industry.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, Siemens NX).
- Experience with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) and CFD tools (e.g., Simcenter STAR-CCM+).
- Strong understanding of material properties, thermal management, and structural design principles.
- Knowledge of GD&T with the ability to perform dimensional stack-ups.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, stamping, extrusion, and injection molding.
- Experience managing components or sub-systems developed by suppliers
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with battery systems or energy storage products.
- Familiarity with automotive standards such as ISO 6469, ISO 19453, or ECE R-100.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping and validation testing.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
