The Challenge
A charger manufacturer needed a full-time field service technician to diagnose, maintain, and repair charging equipment across a defined territory, with extensive travel attached. The requirement sat across three labor pools at once: electrical work with high voltages, IT capability covering the equipment, its software, and the network and telecom links behind it, and a customer-facing service posture under time pressure. Layer on extensive travel and flexibility for overtime, and the qualified pool narrows quickly.
The Search
EV.Careers worked the role against the requirements as written rather than against the job title. EV.Careers screened this profile on charger side diagnostics, not just installation history. We documented the voltages worked, the diagnostic tools used, the depth of EV charger knowledge, and a worked example of a complex field diagnosis and repair. What came back was fault isolation experience across commissioning, firmware, and connectivity, plus grounding and bonding, voltage imbalance, neutral issues, and communication faults between the unit and the network.. Technicians who can pull a circuit and set a charger are available. Technicians who can tell you why a commissioned unit will not hold a connection are a much smaller group.
We then screened the operational requirements directly and documented every answer in the candidate summary that went to the client: lifting capacity, repeated ladder work, extended standing and walking, driving record, travel restrictions, overtime on short notice, seven-day availability, and background check willingness. For a role where the cost of a bad hire is a technician who cannot travel or cannot climb, those answers belong in writing up front, not in week three.
That front-loading is what compressed the back end. The client moved to first interview 5 days after submittal and to an accepted offer 13 days after submittal, because the questions that usually surface late had already been asked and documented.
The Result
The placed technician came out of EVSE field work: Level 2 install and service, panel capacity evaluation to confirm capacity for continuous EV loads, and 240V circuit work to code. Relevant to this role, the technician troubleshoots commissioning, firmware, and connectivity issues directly with charger manufacturer support, and diagnoses faults including breaker tripping under continuous load, improper grounding and bonding, voltage imbalance and neutral issues, and charger communication faults.
The approach is a diagnostic sequence rather than a parts swap. Gather information from the customer, confirm the power source, then isolate. In the field example walked through during screening, the fault was a connectivity problem preventing charging, resolved by addressing the unit's network signal rather than replacing hardware.
The profile also carries solar PV installation and electrical helper experience, battery storage exposure, documented inspection reporting to field management, coordination with permitting authorities, and working Spanish and English. Training includes on the job manufacturer proprietary certifications. The hire was made to cover diagnostics, scheduled maintenance, and repairs across a territory, document the work consistently, and route findings back to the client's remote support and engineering groups.

Closing
If you are hiring field service technicians for charging equipment, the constraint is rarely electrical skill on its own. It is finding that skill attached to network literacy, documentation discipline, and a real willingness to live on the road. Qualify all three before submittal and put the answers in writing, and the interview and offer stages stop absorbing the delay.
