Senior Cost Accountant
Job Summary:
The Senior Cost Accountant is a key member of the finance team, responsible for leading the cost accounting function in a dynamic manufacturing environment. This role demands a deep understanding of cost accounting principles and extensive hands-on experience in manufacturing cost structures. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of driving financial accuracy, optimizing cost control, and supporting strategic decisions with meaningful analysis and insights.
Key Responsibilities:
Cost Accounting Leadership:
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s cost accounting system.
- Analyze standard versus actual costs, investigate variances, and effectively communicate findings and recommendations.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of standard costs, Bills of Materials, and cost roll-ups across all manufacturing processes.
Advanced Financial and Data Analysis:
- Prepare, analyze, and report monthly gross margin analyses by customer, part number, and production jobs.
- Evaluate the cost impact of changes in product design, material usage, production methods, and supplier pricing.
- Conduct complex cost modeling and scenario planning to support pricing strategies, budgeting, and long-term forecasting.
Inventory Management:
- Oversee the full inventory costing process, including physical inventory and cycle counts, account reconciliations, and reserve analysis for the plants in the US and the Philippines
- Monitor inventory transactions and assess risks, working closely with operations to maintain accurate valuation and minimize shrinkage.
- Identify trends and variances to proactively mitigate financial exposure.
Reporting and Compliance:
- Drive month-end and year-end close processes specific to cost and inventory accounting, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare detailed cost and inventory reports and support financial audits.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls specific to manufacturing cost environments.
Process Improvement and Strategy:
- Identify, lead, and implement initiatives to improve cost efficiency, financial transparency, and operational effectiveness.
- Serve as a strategic partner to operations, supply chain, and leadership by providing financial guidance related to cost management.
- Stay current with industry trends, accounting standards, and technology tools relevant to cost accounting.
Team Collaboration and Mentorship:
- Partner closely with cross-functional teams, including finance, operations, supply chain, and engineering.
- Provide mentorship to staff accountants and contribute to building a high-performing finance team.
- Communicate complex financial data in a clear, concise manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification strongly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5–10 years of comprehensive cost accounting experience within a manufacturing environment, preferably involving multi-plant or multi-country operations.
- Skills:
- Expert-level knowledge of cost accounting principles and practices.
- Strong proficiency with ERP systems (MISys, Sage50/Peachtree) and advanced Excel skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage large datasets and drive actionable insights.
- Strong analytical mindset with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable presenting to senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with standard cost methodology.
- Demonstrated success in implementing cost-saving initiatives and improving costing systems.
- Strong knowledge of internal controls, financial compliance, and audit practices related to inventory and cost accounting.
