Overview
Work within our hydrogen storage team to support the design, development, testing, certification, and release of system components including the fueling receptacle, lines, valves, regulators, and interface with the control ECU. Be a recognized hydrogen storage system expert for the Nikola organization.
Responsibilities
You will:
- Working cross-functionally, create specifications for hydrogen fuel system components including fueling receptacle, fill lines and fittings, check valves, shut-off valve, thermal pressure relief device and exhaust piping, manual valve, bleed valve, excess flow valve, regulators, pressure and temperature sensors
- Support LV and control interface requirements for components and the hydrogen system control module, HSCM
- Manage drawings and document releases through engineering change process
- Support component design with suppliers in accordance with Nikola specifications
- Communicate with component suppliers regarding shared CAD files, part and assembly documentation, and specification file management
- Define and coordinate testing, certification, and approval of components in accordance with national and international standards and regulations, including ANSI HGV 3.1, ANSI HPRD 1, EC 79, UN GTR 13, and ECE R134
- Participate in risk assessments, functional safety, FMEAs, etc. and utilize known failure analysis tools to properly document, analyze and resolve potential failures
- Perform root cause analysis of component issues as part of a team including design engineers, manufacturing, supplier quality, suppliers, and other system engineers
- Provide input to the development of standards and regulations as they apply to on-board fuel system components
- Document and maintain company documents, including quality documents and forms, validation test plans, test reports, issue documentation in JIRA, etc.
- Maintain professional relationships, including frequent and open effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Support off-site design, testing activities, FMEAs, etc., some overseas travel may be required
Qualifications
You have:
- BS in mechanical engineering or similar
- 3+ years experience working with compressed gas fuel system components in an automotive environment
- Experience working with and trouble shooting LV interfaces including CAN
- Possess excellent problem-solving skills, ability to identify and develop new ideas and initiatives, able to turn ideas into practical working systems and procedures; creative, hands-on mentality. Familiar with Red-X or Six-Sigma a plus
- Good organizational skills and ability to work with deadlines is a must to be successful in this position
- Possess good decision-making abilities with sound leadership qualities yet open, respectful, and convincing
- Experience working with compressed hydrogen a plus
- Experience with in-vehicle debugging and calibration using tools such as Vector CANalyzer, CANoe, CANape, or similar tools like ETAS INCA, PCAN etc.
- Experience analyzing time series CAN data
Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada. This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
