Tesla is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic team, focusing on the chemical analysis of battery raw materials. This role is critical in ensuring the quality and performance of our cutting-edge battery cells. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in a chemistry lab and be skilled in various analytical techniques, including powder rheology, trace metal analysis, and method validation studies. Start Up Phase Shift: 9:00AM - 5:30PM
Week: Monday - Friday
Must be able to travel occasionally during initial cell expansion project startup phase, with option to become shift tied mid-2024.
Due to business needs in the future after Start Phase this position will move to Tesla's regular shift schedules; Steady State Phase: Alternating Work Schedule (A or B Shift)
Shift A: 6:00AM - 6:00PM
Week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and every other Wednesday
Shift B: 6:00AM - 6:00PM
Week: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and every other Wednesday
What You'll Do
Perform a variety of routine and advanced testing on cell components This includes analyzing the chemical properties of raw materials such as electrolyte composition, acid and moisture content, solution preparation, reaction setup, filtration, and waste handlingThe technician will also perform visual inspections using microscopes, particle size distribution, moisture content, other powder properties, conductivity, and electrical measurements, as well as preparing samples for advanced characterization techniques like SEM, ICP, GC, IC and powder rheologyLead instrument installation, calibration, method development, and test validation (MSA, GRR, etc.) for various analytical analysis methods related to cell manufacturing and interpret complex chemical analysis data generated from laboratory instruments, create detailed reports, and provide insightful conclusions that guide decision-making within the quality operations team Perform regular preventative maintenance, troubleshoot equipment issues, and liaise with external vendors for more complex repairsThey will ensure that the laboratory maintains high standards of cleanliness and organization by enforcing 5S practices and workplace hygiene standards. Maintain inventory of consumable supplies and chemicals Refine testing procedures, draft revisions to SOPs, and ensure the lab is stocked with necessary supplies to meet operational needs
What You'll Bring
A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline is required, with a minimum of two years of hands-on experience in chemical and materials analysis using instrumentation such as SEM/EDS, GC-MS, ICP-OES, IC, titration, and pH measurementThe ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of laboratory operations, including maintaining a safe and organized working environment, and experience with battery manufacturing and testing of cells and raw materials is highly preferredAbility to quickly learn Tesla’s in-house chemical analysis methods, operate specialized equipment, and perform precise sample preparation and safe chemical handling essential for various chemical tests A strong attention to detail is crucial, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a project-focused environment The candidate should be reliable, prompt, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of accuracy and precision in repetitive tasksCapable of performing diverse manual tasks, including the safe handling of heavy objects, maneuvering large pallets using a pallet jack, and managing incoming materialsProficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as experience with internal quality systems and laboratory information management systems (LIMS), is essential. Fluency in English, both written and verbal, is required to effectively communicate within the team and document laboratory activities
