What you’ll do
The Senior Counsel, Regulatory Affairs will report to the Director, Regulatory Affairs and will play a critical strategic and business role in leading the development, implementation, and management of Scout Motors’ regulatory program.
Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:
- Build and implement Scout Motors’ regulatory program in a manner to ensure Scout Motors’ compliance with applicable U.S. and foreign laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance
- Advise internal clients, including the Homologation/Certification, Engineering and Product Teams, EHS, and management on regulatory compliance and reporting requirements
- Build relationships, and communicate regularly, with regulators (such as NHTSA, EPA, CARB and other federal and state agencies), including with respect to investigations and inquiries
- Counsel internal clients and manage and/or supervise the preparation, drafting and submission of regulatory filings and other documents with applicable governmental agencies
- Advise executive management regarding material risks, requirements and opportunities related to the automotive regulatory environment
- Conduct research and analysis to support the Legal Team and other internal clients in identifying relevant laws, regulations, and precedents
- Maintain an up-to-the-date knowledge database and reporting system to ensure the relevant Scout Motors personnel are aware of U.S. and foreign laws and regulations impacting Scout Motors’ vehicles, components, and technology
- Advise the Legal Team, Compliance Team, Engineering, Product and other internal teams on actual, alleged or suspected regulatory noncompliance
- Build and develop an in-house team of regulatory experts and analysts to provide advice, counsel, research, drafting and other work product to you, internal clients and management on matters of regulatory law, safety and compliance
- Participate as regulatory expert on internal investigative and safety reporting and compliance working groups
- Partner with the Compliance Team to build, implement and train personnel on regulatory compliance
- Engage and manage appropriate outside resources, including outside counsel, to assist Scout Motors in regulatory matters
Location & Travel Expectations: The responsibilities of this role require attendance at in-person meetings and events regularly. This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location in Tysons, VA
or Novi, MI. Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.
What you’ll bring

- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and admission to one or more applicable state bars
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in regulatory, safety and/or product liability, with in-house experience and significant experience in the automotive industry
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and best practices with respect to automotive regulatory compliance
- Proven track record of providing legal counsel and support on automotive regulatory matters
- Strong negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience building, developing and managing a team of legal professionals
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex legal issues and provide practical solutions
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines

Pay Transparency
This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.
Initial base salary range = $170,000 - $190,000
Internal leveling code: IC7
