Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The electrified propulsion engineering and design (ePED) team is one of the groups in the electrified propulsion development division of HATCI responsible for providing quality, testing, validation, technical support, and component design for all types of vehicle propulsion systems.
The Position
We are looking for a talented, passionate and motivated Engineering Manager responsible for leading the Electric Vehicle Power Conversion Engineering and Design team in our Superior Township, MI facility. This new group will provide Hyundai, Genesis and Kia vehicles with design, simulation, quality enhancement and North American plant support through technical expertise in electric vehicle power systems including chargers, inverters, DCDC converters and related systems. The position reports to the senior manager of ePED.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead local market engineering efforts for EV power conversion system design and development.
- Lead quality issue tracking, root cause investigation and resolution for power conversion system components, both before and after start-of-production
- Identify cost reduction opportunities for electric vehicle power conversion systems.
- Benchmark competitor inverters, DCDC converters, and grid tie interfaces for cost, performance, efficiency and quality.
- Provide EV propulsion system engineering technical support for North American assembly plants.
- Lead local power conversion subsystem design efforts.
- Engage with suppliers to establish system and component functional requirements to design and produce power conversion systems for North American Hyundai, Genesis and Kia products.
- Lead EV propulsion system research projects with universities and national labs to discover improved designs with lower cost.
- Manage team resources and develop/improve its engineering capability.
- Set team goals and objectives, aligned with department’s strategic direction.
- Manage direct reports, including task assignment, employee development and evaluation.
- Regular reporting of project status and milestones to management in US and abroad
- Create and deliver executive-level presentations on key project milestones, quality issues and team achievements.
- Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)

Basic Qualifications
- B.S. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related engineering field from an accredited university
- 8+ years of automotive engineering experience
- 2+ years of project leadership/management experience
- 2+ years of electric vehicle propulsion system experience, including inverter, charger or DCDC converter design or testing
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge of EV power conversion system principles and operation
- Experience with high power switching (IGBT and SiC/GaN MOSFET), filtering, EMI, high voltage safety and motor control methods
- A proven track record of delivering engineering projects related to EV propulsion design, testing, calibration, validation, or certification
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to clearly explain deeply technical topics to both technical and non-technical collaborators
- Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with international technical experts in research and development headquarters
- Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
- Power electronics simulation experience using software such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSPICE, LTSpice, etc.
- Working knowledge of related EV propulsion systems including batteries, electric motors, embedded controls power conversion systems, charging electronics and control systems
- Working knowledge of vehicle communication networks (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.)
- Valid Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related engineering field
- 2+ years of direct EV engineering team leadership experience
- Experience in vehicle propulsion system related CAE simulations in the thermal, electrical, magnetic, or mechanical domains
- Familiarity with vehicle instrumentation and data acquisition, including calibration tools such as ETAS INCA
