Scope of Job
The Hardware Test Engineer 3 will help develop and test various products in the PowerFlex portfolio. This role is responsible for leading product testing to ensure that our products are reliable, ready for installation, and operational in demanding customer environments. The portfolio of hardware products includes those built or assembled by PowerFlex, such as the Nexus controls and monitoring platform, those resold by PowerFlex such as EVSE chargers, and major distributed energy products that are purchased from strategic vendors such as energy storage systems, metering devices, and third-party control systems.
The Hardware Test Engineer 3 is a highly skilled and experienced professional responsible testing of integrated hardware and software systems for electric vehicle charging, solar power, battery energy storage, edge control systems, and industrial communications. The Hardware Test Engineer 3 will work closely with customers, engineering, and sales teams to ensure that our software solutions meet the needs of our customers. This role will work with engineers to select and optimize hardware components, evaluate COTS devices for use in our product, assemble and test finished devices. The ideal candidate should have the aptitude to enable state-of-the-art communications and computing hardware.
Location
This role will be based out of our Mountain View Office and will be in-person 90% of the time. We will only be able to consider applicants who are local to Mountain View or are willing to relocate.
Responsibilities
80% - Product Testing
- Developing and executing test plans
- Developing and executing test plans for electric vehicle chargers
- Identifying and resolving software and hardware defects
- Test instrumentation data acquisition
- Test automation
- Working with other engineers to ensure that poducts meet all requirements
- Maintaining test documentation
- Engage in technical interchange meetings between software development team, project management and subcontractors to develop new feature sets for future product deployment
- Implement Quality Assurance activities to meet system performance standards and requirements
- Contribute to product testing and certification activities and review testing and qualification procedures
- Inform the product development teams on common failure modes or mistakes in implementation from client groups as well as propose potential solutions
- Mentor junior engineers
- Keeping up-to-date on the latest testing technologies
20% - Technical Management
- Conduct training and educate project execution team members with new products or product features
- Contribute to design reviews
- Root cause failure analysis for products returned from field operation
- Keep up to date with certification and regulatory requirements that are being applied to products in the field.
- Provide field support for first article or key Beta product deployments
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Science or equivalent discipline, or the equivalent work experience. Masters preferred.
- 3+ years of manufacturing test engineering or product development experience
- Experience creating test automation with test measurement equipment
- Experienced test engineer with hands on experience supporting test and product debug on the manufacturing line
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Experienced engineer with hands on experience supporting test and product design
- Ability to work cross functionally with various Software, Electrical, and Design teams
- Experience creating test automation with test measurement equipment and data acquisition
- Experience using Linux systems, preferably Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu
- Working knowledge of analog or RF circuit analysis, electronic theory, and test instrumentation.
- Experience with lab and testing equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, hipot testers, and ESD guns
- Familiar with manufacturing test software tools such as LabView and Python
- Working knowledge of analog or RF circuit analysis, electronic theory, and test instrumentation, with “hands-on” electronic troubleshooting experience
- Process oriented and committed to continuous improvements
- Excellent interpersonal organizational skills
- Mature knowledge of electronics, circuits, and three-phase power systems
- Calm under pressure and can effectively prioritize among competing tasks
Compensation
The pay range for this position is $102,500 - $171,000 annually. This position is eligible for PowerFlex's comprehensive Health and Welfare plans including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, 401(k) retirement plan and paid time off. The total compensation for this position may include an annual performance bonus (or other incentive compensation, as applicable). PowerFlex's compensation packages carefully consider a candidate's qualifications, experiences, and education in relation to the position.
Physical Requirements
Normal office environment. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds at times
Working Conditions
Approximately 90% of the time is spent in the office/lab environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Adobe etc.), telephones, and general office equipment. Possibly 10% of the time is spent traveling to conferences or meetings or field traveling to project sites and vendor facilities to support the activities of projects.
